"story": "The juvenile is alone in a side-corridor of the Selvath confederation's third-tier archive hall, where the wall channels carry routed brine at 360 K and the air smells of redox-potential and old plate-laminate. Their second-moult armour is still soft at the seams and their appendages are lighter than they will ever be again; the awaruite stylus feels unweighted in their grip. The plate they are cutting is a fresh shed from their own first-moult armour, polished by a cohort-mate two days ago, and the name they are cutting into it is Khav-of-Thelvar-Slope, an ancestor eleven moulting-generations dead whose case-histories fill three corridors of this hall. The juvenile knows the case-histories — they have read the Thelvar offtake commissioning plate every eighth-day since their first moult — and they know that they are the four-hundredth Khav to inscribe this name on a fresh plate, and they know that the four hundred inscriptions will be read together as a single distributed annotation by the next reader who comes looking. They are afraid they will mar the plate. They are afraid the third stroke of the second glyph will fall short by half a millimetre because the cohort elder said that is the stroke that fails first when the appendage tip is unsteady. They breathe through the chemosensory patches and feel the brine in the wall channel hum against the substrate; their integrator runs three threads — the stroke, the ancestor, the ancestor's reader — and meets them at a synchronisation glyph that is the name itself. The first stroke goes clean. The second goes clean. The third stroke falls a hair short, and the juvenile does not correct it. They inscribe it as it fell. This is the form of the deferred-case-history at the smallest scale: a disagreement with one's own intention, faithfully recorded, carried forward unresolved. The next reader will see four hundred names and the four-hundredth will be theirs and the third stroke will be a hair short. The juvenile sets the stylus down. Outside the corridor a cohort-mate is drumming the evening status thread and the juvenile rises to join, plate cradled in two appendages, and walks back into the threading"
